Once There Was a Song in Me

Once there was a song in me,
The saddest song of love was crying
Within my heart, in silence dying
And merging with the raging sea.

I knew not how it came to me--
That tristful song within me weeping--
I looked at you, as you were sleeping,
And breathed the darkness of the sea.

And then I felt so alone,
Breathing the night, the tranquil air,
I searched your lips, your silky hair,
But you weren't there--you were gone.

Once there was a song in me,
But then the fog of dreams had cleared,
Into the night you disappeared--
Merged with the darkness of the sea.
